Bellevue Morgue Pier

As the morgues at the hospital filled, many of the victims were moved to a makeshift morgue on the pier. Due to the slow process of moving the bodies, there was a long line up of patrol wagons filled with victims waiting to get dropped off at the morgue.

Relatives, loved ones and friends file through the maze of coffins looking for their own in the morgue on the pier.

Fire fighters and police officers collected jewelry, handbags, money, pay envelopes and other personal objects from victims at the Asch Building and carried them to the 26th Street pier morgue where they were used to help identify the dead.

As the light of day fell away, more bodies fill numbered coffins as police and workers hold kerosene lanterns to help family and friends identify loved ones at the East River pier.
